Project: Feasibility study Clean Energy Hub Riemsdijk - Tiel

Feasibility study:

Exploring the possibility of making businesses at Riemsdijk self-sufficient and investigating the potential to use the Terminal on the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal to make inland shipping more sustainable (Path2Zero). Period: 2022 – December 2023.

Study Question:

Is it possible to establish a Clean Energy Hub for inland shipping along the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal, thereby contributing to the Path2Zero project?

Challenges\Questions:

  1. Is there sufficient (excess) sustainably generated energy available from businesses at Riemsdijk/Medel to support the sustainability of inland shipping?
  2. Is there enough space at Riemsdijk to establish a Clean Energy Hub?

Results\Solutions:

  1. There is sufficient local energy generation potential for the businesses at Riemsdijk to become self-sufficient. While only one company currently has solar panels on its roof, there is ample unused roof space available at Riemsdijk/Medel. Additionally, approximately 250,000m² of available roof space is located nearby in Medel. Plans are also in place to develop a floating solar park (approximately 100,000m²) at Beldert, 2 kilometers away, and a wind farm (Echteld-Lienden) 5 kilometers away. Legally, direct line connections are possible (per ACM regulations).
  2. At Riemsdijk, one of the companies (AVRI) is relocating to a larger site in Medel. Once completed, this will free up approximately 7,000m² of space, which could be used for container or battery storage. Additionally, two undeveloped plots at Riemsdijk could potentially be utilized. From a technical perspective, it is also feasible to directly connect one or two wind turbines to the Clean Energy Hub or its storage facilities.
  3. A further benefit of the project is the reduction and prevention of local grid congestion
