Feasibility Study
Exploring the possibility of making businesses at Riemsdijk self-sufficient by maximizing local energy generation and minimizing transport over the grid infrastructure of the network operator (congestion-relieving). Creating a virtual connection point at the Medel switching station
Study Questions
1. Which businesses are connected to the cable field: Medel – Riemsdijk?
2. What is the available transport capacity on the aforementioned cable field?
3. What is the willingness of businesses to participate in an energy community?
4. What is the total energy consumption of the businesses on the cable field?
5. What additional (generation) sources are available on Medel itself and/or in the immediate vicinity?
Results / Solutions
1. Approximately 42 businesses are connected to the “blue” cable field Medel – Riemsdijk, of which 34 have been approached and agreed to participate, while 1 business indicated no interest.
2. The focus is on the cable field TLML 10-1V13. There is still some free transport capacity available for energy delivery but not for energy feedback. Additionally, not all businesses are connected to cable field 1V13 but are distributed across four cable fields
3. Willingness to participate is increasing. By July 2023, 60% of the businesses expressed interest in joining the project.
4. The reported energy consumption of participating businesses is approximately 100 million kWh annually. This figure represents a snapshot, with transportation companies facing significant challenges in the sustainability of their trucks. Some businesses also need to transition away from gas, for which geothermal energy is seen as a promising solution.
5. The network operator was informed of the possibility of importing energy via a “direct line” from the planned wind farm Echteld Lienden (2 or 3 wind turbines). Additionally, sustainably generated energy from a floating solar park could be utilized. This could have a significant positive impact on congestion (approximately 50 MW of transport capacity!).
Follow-Up Actions
- Working groups are being formed with specific goals, including geothermal energy, procurement, and e-charging (heavy-duty/trucks).
- Some businesses are exploring options for grid reinforcements and flexible capacity.
